Talk about cutting through the clutter! Want to make a point about pointless wall posts? Check out the Unmarketing hit song and video. Makes the point, yes? If you want to do something even more memorable, check out Scott’s contrarian marketing philosophy and tactics on his blog and Twitter stream (but please don’t post teddy bears, hearts, or even blessings on his wall).

Scott took a few minutes with me to talk about his upcoming book, Unmarketing, the tour to support it (how ’bout that “un-book tour”?), and the un-usual method he employed to git-r-done. Time with Scott is like happy hour at an oxygen bar: you’ll leave refreshed and pumped for a grand adventure.

<itunes:summary>Talk about cutting through the clutter! Want to make a point about pointless wall posts? Check out the Unmarketing hit song and video. Makes the point, yes? If you want to do something even more memorable, check out Scott's contrarian marketing philosophy and tactics on his blog and Twitter stream (but please don't post teddy bears, hearts, or even blessings on his wall).

Scott took a few minutes with me to talk about his upcoming book, Unmarketing, the tour to support it (how 'bout that "un-book tour"?), and the un-usual method he employed to git-r-done. Time with Scott is like happy hour at an oxygen bar: you'll leave refreshed and pumped for a grand adventure.

Michelle brings a fresh perspective to video. She also raises the bar for DIY produced video content! If you’ll watch her videos, I think you’ll catch a glimpse of the spunky spirit of social media—fun, unabashed-ness, openness, expression, personality.

By day Michelle is the community manager for Paris-based Synthesio, a brand monitoring service. By the rest of the day, she creates cool videos.

I caught up with her by phone and had a good chat with her about what it takes to create video content. She also shared insight for effective engagement on social media too. (I know, you’re heard a lot about “engagement” already; it’s sounds more interesting, though, when Michelle talks about it.)

Proof of her concept? Check out my friend Mark Schaefer’s blog to see the video Michelle created for him.

Love the title: Just Listen!

Released late in 2009, it’s already a best seller. Its author is a well-known psychiatrist, consultant, business coach. He also wrote Get Out of Your Own Way and Get Out of Your Own Way at Work. He writes a leadership column for FastCompany and is a syndicated columnist, including columns for The Huffington Post and Psychology Today. Three times named one of America’s top psychiatrists by the Consumers’ Research Council of America, he is frequently quoted or featured in The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Fortune, Newsweek and others. You may catch him on CNN, NPR, Fox News, or on BBC-TV.

He took time out to talk with me about his new book and social media. It was a wonderful event for me. We strayed off topic as both of us pondered aloud the tragedy in Haiti. When we did, he naturally demonstrated empathetic listening skills, enriching the experience for both of us. His ability to express caring even over a phone call created a unique sense of friendship and kinship.

I believe social media, like no other media, affords us all the opportunity to make such connections every day. When we do, we enrich others while enriching our own experiences.

These interviews have a profound influence on my life. I hope they do for you, too. You can subscribe to the Social Media Professor podcast on iTunes.

“Help! I’m drowing!”

You probably felt that way about information overload BEFORE you added social media to your daily routine. Now you, me and everyone else are drowning in a swirling sea of data, appeals, ads, options, opt-ins, opt-outs and so many pop-up screens we’re all pooped-out. The problem is, as business owners and leaders, we still have to communicate and connect.

On my radio show, Social Media Professor, I spoke with someone who can help: Sam Horn. Sam is someone who knows how to make product names, taglines and headlines POP! She assures us we “don’t have to have an MBA or a multimillion-dollar budget to create one-of-a-kind ideas, products, and messages. All you need is the POP! Process: a fun, fascinating, and strategic approach for making your message purposeful, original, and pithy—to generate instant intrigue and word-of-mouth buzz.”

 <itunes:summary>"Help! I'm drowing!"
You probably felt that way about information overload BEFORE you added social media to your daily routine. Now you, me and everyone else are drowning in a swirling sea of data, appeals, ads, options, opt-ins, opt-outs and so many pop-up screens we're all pooped-out. The problem is, as business owners and leaders, we still have to communicate and connect.

On my radio show, Social Media Professor, I spoke with someone who can help: Sam Horn. Sam is someone who knows how to make product names, taglines and headlines POP! She assures us we "don't have to have an MBA or a multimillion-dollar budget to create one-of-a-kind ideas, products, and messages. All you need is the POP! Process: a fun, fascinating, and strategic approach for making your message purposeful, original, and pithy—to generate instant intrigue and word-of-mouth buzz."

Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Book crafter and promoter extraordinaire Sam Horn will be our guest next week. She knows how to make just about anything POP! We’ll be talking about adding a little POP! to your online social presence.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010
Doing “social” media at conventions and association meetings long before there was a Facebook, internationally acclaimed speaker Terry Brock will give us a new spin on the new social media.

Tuesday, February 2, 2010
Rising video star Michelle Chmielewski will send us some fiber-optic enthusiasm as she shares her tricks on making quite cool YouTube videos that pack a punch.

Tuesday, February 9, 2010
Zig Ziglar made popular the notion that “you can have everything in life you want, if you’ll just help enough other people get what they want.” Bob Burg developed that message and made in engaging for a whole new generation of riders. As the author of the runaway best-selling book The GoGiver, he’ll have some welcome insight on how to create meaningful connections online, offline, all the time.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010
What’s the World Wide Rave all about? We’ll get the scoop straight from the author when we talk with David Meerman Scott. In addition to his also best-selling book World Wide Rave, he’s releasing a second edition of The New Rules of Marketing and PR.

Tuesday, February 23, 2010
If you’re in the B2B space, own an ad agency, or are in business development, you’ll especially enjoy Michael Gass. His Fuel Lines blog is popular with agencies around the world. His insight will help fuel your own biz dev efforts.

Tuesday, March 9, 2010
In April of this year, I’ll be speaking on the same program with my own professional speaking role model: Zig Ziglar. That’s been a dream for a long time and I’m ecstatic that I’ll have the chance to see him again AND be on the program with him. This past year has been a bit challenging for the man eager to see everyone “at the top.” We’ll be speaking with his son, and current CEO of the Ziglar Corporation, Tom Ziglar to get an update and hear what Zig and the whole company are planning for the future.

If you’d like to be on the show, please send me an email message (please include your Twitter address) and let me know what your topic is.

Several folks have asked about sponsoring the show. If you’d like to talk about being a sponsor, please let me know. I’m not sure what direction we’ll go with the sponsorship, but it would be good to hear what you’re looking for.

To hear and be a part of the show, tune in at 11:30am ET USA to the Social Media Professor.
Joshua Peters is the co-author of Twittfaced, an entry-level, social media 101 work designed for newbies to web 2.0. The story today is not so much the book (there are, indeed, many, many new books on social media after all), as it is a model for how nearly anyone can use existing, readily available technology to get stuff done.

Joshua and his fellow author, Jacob Morgan, have never met in the offline world. Their only connected was shared interest around Jacob’s blog content and Twitter. Based upon their online affinity, they boldly ventured to create something for FREE and gave it away without reservation. Their free ebook (again, not an uncommon tool) answered a specific question for a targeted audience: Social Media for Authors.

As the ebook circulated, it caught the attention of a publisher. As many authors dream, the publisher took initiative to contact Joshua and requested he write a book.

The story is actually a case study vignette that should inspire folks to dream a little bigger about what can be done through online collaboration.
